FUCK YOU.
Putting x's on your myspace name does not make you straight edge.
Putting x's on your hands does not make you straight edge.
Belittling others does not make you straight edge.
Forming a "crew" does not make you straight edge.
Thinking you're better than others does not make you straight edge.
Calling yourself the poster boy for straight edge hardcore does not make you straight edge.
Declaring edge and not even being old enough to drive does not make you straight edge.
Listening to straight edge bands does not make you straight edge.
Considering yourself a veteran of the scene at age 17 does not make you straight edge.
This is my life and all that it's become is a fucking trend. Fuck all of you. You're a poison in the scene and I hate to be lumped into the same group as all of you. I can't wait till you all become fucking alcoholics at age 21. It's never been about fitting in, it's never been about ganging up on others. It's about you and your personal decisions. There's a reason why Ian Mackaye doesn't even want to be lumped in with what straight edge has become.

You're right about all that dude.
And even though I fit at least one of those descriptions, I don't need to. I try not to label myself as straight edge. I used to just say that I'm a Christian and people assumed I wasn't into smoking or drinking and all that, but now it almost means nothing to just say that you're a Christian. So I say that I'm edge and then they get it. I guess I didn't realize that there's a lot more to it. I'm not straight edge. I'm just clean. I don't really know joe to explain it but the way I see it: we were born and lived with out drugs and alcohol so why would I need it now? Espeacially if it's only harmful.
It's definitely not people like you that this blog was directed at. It's the people that find vanity within being straight edge that really get to me. I just watched an interview with Ian Mackaye and he made the point that he never even intended on starting this movement but it was just the right and logical choice for him to make. That's how I have always viewed it with me. I was straight edge before I even knew what that term was. Sure I have it as my myspace name, but that was more of just a joke making fun of kids that do that. Now I don't want to take it down because, yeah, I am proud of it, but at the same time I don't want to be lumped into this new generation of "edge" kids that change their name on myspace and do all that bull crap. It's just frustrating to see something that has been a big part of my life become something that is so easily mockable.
I never thought of it this way. I've always just associated "straight edge" with your average dumb ass high school trend. But I can empathize with you when something you hold to be true is exploited by ignorant kids. Very interesting rant.
